The First Nations Technology Council is seeking a creative, dynamic and articulate Communications Coordinator to support the Communications Division with copywriting, storytelling, and marketing projects that advance our mission. This is an exciting opportunity to use your writing, editing, and creative skillset to contribute to advancing digital equity for Indigenous peoples throughout British Columbia.
The role will be responsible for developing informed and timely communications materials for students, social media and web copy, annual reports, funder reports, presentations and briefing notes to highlight the work of the Technology Council across the province, and more. The Communications Coordinator will coordinate and attend meetings and engagement events, and prepare agendas and materials to ensure meeting preparedness and success. The ability to consult and collaborate across the organization, integrate revisions, support the design and implementation of communications and engagement plans and materials, and a strong follow through are pivotal to the success of this role.
The Communications Coordinator reports to the Director, Communications and Engagement. The role requires a proactive and organized communications professional, with a good working knowledge of the history and issues related to technology and innovation in First Nations and Indigenous communities in BC, and the ability to speak to a diversity of audiences including First Nations students, communities and leadership, government, technology and innovation sectors, and the philanthropic community. The Communications Coordinator will need to be a collaborative and consultative team member, and must also be able to effectively coordinate multiple projects, with different deliverables and competing deadlines.

The First Nations Technology Council is an Indigenous-led organization that serves all 203 First Nations communities across British Columbia, working to ensure that Indigenous peoples have full and equitable access to the tools, training and support to maximize the opportunities presented by technology and innovation. The Technology Council sees the strengthening of local Indigenous economies and the empowering of Indigenous innovators as contributing to Indigenous self-determination and nationhood.

About the Role:
- Draft copy for all external communications (i.e., social media, blogs, print materials/publications, e-newsletters, annual reports, funder reports, presentations, marketing materials, press releases, and briefing notes).
- Create and coordinate the Technology Council’s monthly e-newsletter and attract/coordinate new subscriptions.
- Revise, edit and proofread all Technology Council communications materials.
- Align all communications materials to the Technology Council brand, vision, and values.
- Support relationship coordination with key partners, interested parties and organizations.
- Respond to client inquiries relating to the First Nations in BC Knowledge Network and through Communications Division general inbox.
- Track key performance indicators and measure progress towards Divisional goals.
- Collaborate with other Divisional leads to develop communications materials that support the objectives of the organization, projects, decisions, and more, as assigned.
- Coordinate with other Communications Division team members and contractors on graphic design, web development, and digital marketing projects.
- Support engagement activities through planning and coordinating, capturing feedback, and creating engagement summaries.

Skills and Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Strong revision, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to customize content and style for diverse audiences.
- Strong working knowledge of the history and issues related to technology and innovation in First Nations and Indigenous communities in British Columbia.
- Responsive to communications requests with an ability to provide quick turn-around
- Support the Director in proactive communications issues identification and management.
- Ability to coordinate multiple deadlines and priorities, and follow through on communications requests and activities.
- Sound document formatting ability.
- Interest and ability to learn Salesforce, Slack, Monday, Dropbox, Google.docs and other online tools.
- Commitment to adhere to the Technology Council’s guidelines for project management, file storage, approval processes.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Communications, public relations, or a combination of education, demonstrated experience, and ability in the communications field.
- Minimum 2-3 years communications experience
- Proficiency with MS Office applications, including Word and PPT.
- Willingness to learn and drive adoption of new technologies.
- Demonstrated understanding of First Nations and Indigenous communities
- Ability to work remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Hootsuite Social Marketing Certificate is an asset.
- IAP2 Foundations, or knowledge is an asset.
- Membership in a relevant professional association (such as IABC, or CPRS BC) is an asset.
This a one-year term employment position, renewable pending performance and available funding.
This role is open to remote candidates anywhere in BC, with a preference for candidates able to travel occasionally to the First Nations Technology Council headquarters Unit 102 – 70 Orwell Street on Squamish Nation land in North Vancouver, B.C. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will work remotely until further notice, in alignment with public health directives and best practices.
